EVENT DESCRIPTION
Biological research on marine colonial hydrozoans of the genus Hydractinia dates back to August Weismann in the 1880s. The cnidarians are the bilaterians’ sister group, which gives them an informative place on the animal tree from a phylogenetic perspective. From a scientific perspective, members of the genus Hydractinia, often known as hydrozoan cnidarians or hydroids, are of great interest since they are among the extremely few animals that have the ability to renew their whole body throughout the course of their entire lives. Migratory stem cells, or “i-cells,” which express genes with bilaterian homologs known to be involved in stem cell biology, are what enable this astonishing potential for self-renewal..
